Creative Wedding Photography

I fell in love with wedding photography when I realised just how creative it can be. When I was first asked to photograph a wedding my first thoughts were of lots of groups shots and little room for creativity. However, minutes into my first wedding I realised that wedding photography can be as creative as the photographer wants it to be.

The majority of my clients book me for their wedding because they love my creative approach to wedding photography. Some of my clients want beautiful, romantic and creative images of their wedding day no matter what we might have to do to get them. A few weeks ago Ellie and Adam got married and they were determined to get some images in a corn field that they had spotted. We had planned to take these images after their church ceremony but it was raining. Not just a little bit but it was torrential. I think there had even been weather warnings that weekend! Ellie and Adam were not put off though and armed with large umbrellas we followed them to the field! Fortunately Ellie’s sister persuaded her to wait until later in the day as getting soaking wet so early in the day probably wasn’t the best plan!

After the wedding breakfast the evening sun was out, so Ellie grabbed her welly boots and off we went back to the field. And it was completely worth the wait.

Here I am following the happy couple into the field!

I have two approaches to creative wedding photography. Firstly, I am always on the look out for creating beautiful and unique images throughout the day, most of which the couple won’t realize I have taken until they see their slide show after the wedding. And secondly, I am led by the clients. In this case Ellie and Adam asked to go to the corn field and so I excitedly followed them. I let them go into the field and enjoy having some time away from all their guests to take in their wedding day and their new life as husband and wife. If I can get the images I want without interrupting them then that is great. Otherwise, I will gently suggest that they look at each other, or stand slightly differently. I don’t believe in directing every shot though. I want to create natural images that are a result of the beauty, romance, fun and love of a wedding day.
